Introduction by Rose

Hello, My name is Rose Hosken. I feel very lucky to have been born in Cornwall and be able to stay here as well. I studied locally and got my BA Hons in Fine Art from Plymouth university in 2011.

Returning home from Plymouth I found that I had changed a lot, both in mind set and what I wanted from life. I had been made to study Modern styles of art and it had taken over. What become clear to me was how... connected my passion for Art was with the landscape/nature and the sense of connection that came from physically being in or close to those environments. I was so drained from pushing myself and trying so hard to ‘fit’ what they wanted, it took between 12-18 months before my creative spark returned.

I spent lots of time travelling the countryside near my home and visiting friends. Got a part time job (because money is needed for living) and focused on Me and my ‘healing’ rather than pushing myself to create.  When I started to draw again, all the things I had learned started to come together, watercolour was a medium I loved as a child and felt it would be interesting to hone my skills in one area, rather than spread myself out or start something completely new to me. I took myself back the basics, drawing and sketching parts of the body, took up life drawing classes where I free to used what I wanted but it was also fun and challenging.

Using skills, I learned from Oil painting and observing paintings by traditional artists, I have been able to build up detailed illustrative images, that require a lot of patience and layers. Some have stories that go with them others are studies of flowers.

In the last 12 months I decided to expand upon my skills. Then when my mum was clearing her craft room, she found an un-used set of silk inks and she offered them to me. I had used silk inks/paints before back when I was in collage I became very interested in fabrics, mainly silk work as it was part of the Art and Design course I was on. I got excited and... things have just grown from that.

What I’d like to do in this Blog, along side talking about what I’m doing in my own practise is connect history and contemporary Arts together. Creating a link or bridge in areas that have become blurred or forgotten under the currents of “Modern” art styles.

I hope you, the readers, can learn as I learn and that you can learn to enjoy art in all it’s forms.
